Hive Construction
The worm hive is made with an:
-
Outer shell of wood
-
Inner Shell of
polypropylene
Outer Shell
We
use two types of timber for the hives, English Red cedar
and Douglas fir / Larch sourced from Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC)
certified Chain of Custody suppliers in Cornwall and
Devon. The outer shell comes in a natural finish or
painted in the Cuprinol Wood Shades as shown in the hive
colour range.
Inner Shell
Polypropylene plastic is used on the inside for two
purposes.
-
It keeps the
attractive outer shell, the wood, dry and clean as
the kitchen waste that is put in the hive contains,
in many cases, up to 90% water. The water is
released as the waste decays and is eaten by the
worms. The bottom of the hive contains a tank to
collect the liquid released. This liquid is, in
itself, a very good plant food that you can use on
your house plants and garden plants.
-
The plastic keeps
the food moist for the worms who like a fairly damp
environment in which to work.
