Hive Construction

The worm hive is made with an:

  • Outer shell of wood
  • Inner Shell of polypropylene

Outer Shell

We use two types of timber for the hives, English Red cedar and Douglas fir / Larch sourced from Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified Chain of Custody suppliers in Cornwall and  Devon. The outer shell comes in a natural finish or painted in the Cuprinol Wood Shades as shown in the hive colour range.

 Inner Shell

Polypropylene plastic is used on the inside for two purposes.

  • It keeps the attractive outer shell, the wood, dry and clean as the kitchen waste that is put in the hive contains, in many cases, up to 90% water. The water is released as the waste decays and is eaten by the worms. The bottom of the hive contains a tank to collect the liquid released.  This liquid is, in itself, a very good plant food that you can use on your house plants and garden plants.
  • The plastic keeps the food moist for the worms who like a fairly damp environment in which to work.

The parts of the Hive

Base tank on short sturdy legs. The tank collects the nutritious liquid that is released as the waste is converted into compost

Three interchangeable trays which contain the waste. The trays have holes in to allow the liquid to drain to the tank and the worms to move between the trays
